Mountain E4 paths South of Chania

The European E4 path, that crosses Crete, is found at a small distance from Paleochora. The path is kept in excellent condition and is accessible 12 months a year. Generally, there are countless walking paths and trails in the area around Paleochora. Some in Paleochora itself, in the neighboring coastal village of Sougia, in the Sfakia region, and in Loutro. Paleochora and South Crete are among the top destinations for walking and hiking in Europe. In the area you can find breathtaking gorges, picturesque trails, and untouched, unique nature, all in the same location. Everyone should keep in mind that hiking is prohibited on hot days.

E4 Paleochora – Lissos – Sougia

This amazing hike is about 16km long and takes about 5-6 hours. The trail is clear and well-marked with the typical E4 trail back-yellow signs. It crosses the archaeological site of Lissos, where you can find water from the local spring. It isn’t too difficult but plenty of water, sun protection, and steady shoes are recommended.

E4 Elafonissi – Paleochora

Perhaps the most impressive route of E4 in Crete is the one that connects the lagoon of Elafonissi with Paleochora. The route is 18 km long and to complete it you will need 3 to 4 hours. This part of the trail is not particularly difficult and passes along the coast, so you can make stops to cool off in the waters of the Libyan Sea.
